As one prepares for sermons this Sunday, one wonders how the lectionary will speak into the preoccupations of a community. Not only the Queensland floods (15 lives lost), but the many more lives lost in flooding this week in Brazil, Sri Lanka, the Philippines and South Africa will be not far from our minds. TheContinue reading “Disaster & Discipleship”

A New Year’s Resolution awaiting fulfilment…
A bit of bush doggerel for a job I have to get done… I sit by the fountain on New Year’s Day; the bricks shimmer and shine in burning heat. Through the parched bowls the leaves swirl and sway; no streams of water – the pump is beat! Beneath the cover the water is brackish;Continue reading “A New Year’s Resolution awaiting fulfilment…”
Our streetscape is changing…
For two years our street has been a bit like a ghost town… some would prefer to say serene and quiet. It is only four weeks away from the second anniversary of the Sunday afternoon fire that took out the shopping centre – all eight businesses including the supermarket that had just had a multi-millionContinue reading “Our streetscape is changing…”
Wembley Downs shops nearing completion
Mostly of interest to Wembley Downs folk who have been missing their local agora for almost two years. The proposed al fresco areas seem to be marked by the low curving balustrades to the middle and left. My church office being just across the road, I can see me setting up my laptop there andContinue reading “Wembley Downs shops nearing completion”
Wembley Downs Shops – the walls are going up!
A simple door frame at lunchtime – two hours later a whole section of wall. This calls for another haiku! At dawn, a grey slab now sitting up strong and proud September awaits.
This morning it worked…
My flock and I have been experimenting a little lately with “mutual mentoring” – something that Paul’s theology of the church says we ought to be good at. Reprising Eugene Peterson’s “Five Smooth Stones for Pastoral Work” as a framework, we use the Revised Common Lectionary, our source for Sunday’s readings, as a guide to reflectContinue reading “This morning it worked…”
Mystery at Wembley Downs
The RAC traytop was off-loading my wife’s disabled Colt last night. It was behind the church, where she usually parks the car. The tray had just lowered the vehicle, when some loud shouts made us look up. Torch lights were bobbing towards us from the road reserve. Behind the lights loomed two characters, running fullContinue reading “Mystery at Wembley Downs”
Three local churches join together for Pentecost communion
It’s a tradition in these parts now. Every Pentecost over the last four years we have joined with the Uniting Church at St Paul’s Anglican Church to celebrate Pentecost with an Anglican Eucharist. Everyone wears red and the sharing of communion is a highlight. Here’s the reflection I shared on John 15:27-16:4 As well asContinue reading “Three local churches join together for Pentecost communion”
200 years
Things are beginning to happen amongst the individual and diverse communities of what began to emerge 200 years ago as the Restoration Movement and ended up under a plethora of monikas covering most of the countries of the world – variously Churches of Christ, Disciples of Christ, the Christian Church, churches (small c) of Christ.Continue reading “200 years”
From the ashes
Seems like such a small thing after the devastating bushfires in Victoria, but around our streets it’s quite big. We’re getting our shops back! See here.
